The 2nd Khmer Southern Yuke Theater Arts Festival was opened on the evening of April 1 at Tra Vinh University and will run until April 7.

Among those attending the ceremony were Mr. Tran Thanh Lam, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department; People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui, President of the Vietnam Association of Theater Artists; Mr. Le Thanh Binh, Vice Chairman of Tra Vinh Provincial People's Committee, and representatives from agencies, departments, and Khmer Yuke art units.

This festival showcases 13 plays by 13 state and private professional art units from Tra Vinh, Kien Giang, Soc Trang, Ca Mau, and Bac Lieu provinces, featuring more than 500 actors. The plays, with a duration of 90 to 130 minutes, include folk, historical, and modern genres such as Prince Ve Son Do, General Rit Thi Sac, Love Story between Fairies and Mortals, Keeping the Sea and Islands of Homeland, and Love of Areca Flowers.

Speaking at the opening of the festival, People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Theater Artists emphasized that the art of Yuke theater has formed and developed over the past century. This is a unique art form imbued with the cultural identity of the Khmer community in the South.

However, due to the market mechanism's impact, the Yuke stage has faced difficulties and challenges and has been at risk of disappearing. This festival aims to improve the quality of the art of Yuke theater step by step, encourage artists and artisans, contribute to the Khmer people's spiritual life, and preserve and promote the quintessential value of this unique art form.

Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Le Thanh Binh stated that Tra Vinh province was honored to be chosen to host the second Yuke Festival, ten years after the first Um Ke Khmer Southern Theater Arts Festival was held in Soc Trang in 2013. The People's Committee of Tra Vinh province has directed the Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism to preside over and coordinate with related sectors to organize the festival successfully, effectively, and practically.

He affirmed that the festival provides an opportunity for artists and actors to showcase their talents, exchange cultural experiences, and assess the current situation to find directions for improving the quality of art, encouraging innovation and creativity in the Yuke theater art form in the South, and developing it further to suit modern life. The festival aims to preserve and promote the unique cultural identity of the Khmer community in the South while also providing a platform for artistic exchange and innovation.
